Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids around where your eyelashes grow, usually affecting both eyes. It occurs when the tiny oil glands around your eyelashes become clogged, causing irritated and red eyelids. It can become a chronic condition that can be hard to treat but it does not usually affect your vision. It can be unsightly and uncomfortable but it is not contagious. However, you do want to treat it before it becomes worse or leads to other problems.

Blepharitis symptoms and signs include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Red eyes
  • A gritty, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Eyelids that appear greasy
  • Itchy eyelids
  • Red, swollen eyelids
  • Flaking of the skin around the eyes
  • Crusted eyelashes upon awakening
  • Eyelid sticking
  • More frequent blinking
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eyelashes that grow abnormally (misdirected eyelashes)
  • Loss of eyelashes
